Apple is reducing the revenue share for most developers - but not for the Fortnite developer

Apple announced that it is in the process of drastically cutting the revenue sharing rate with most developers, a few months before the start of its trial against Epic Games, which will take place in May 2021.

According to the statement issued by the tech giant, the commission will be reduced from 30% to 15% for software and game developers who have annual net sales of less than $ 1 million on the App Store.

As you know, Apple gets a 30 percent commission from the total price of paid apps and games, as well as in-app purchases through the App Store. However, this will not be the case for long for the app and game developers with relatively small and medium incomes.

According to the report issued by the company, Sensor Tower, which specializes in monitoring and statistics, this decision will affect approximately 98 percent of iOS developers - making it a huge leap for Apple.

However, the report notes that 98% of the total app revenue for Apple is only 5% of Apple’s app revenue - which may explain Apple’s encouragement to take such a decision.

Of course, this decision will not include the developers of games and applications that achieve annual net sales of more than one million dollars - which in other words means that the decision does not include games from Epic Games, which even if the court decided to return the game Fortnite to the iOS App Store, Apple will have about 30 percent of its in-house purchases of items.

The company, Epic, filed a lawsuit against the global technology giant after it violated the controls and rules of the iOS app store, which forced Apple to remove Fortnite from the App Store last August. The upcoming trial will be centered on a major breach of a contract agreement and an antitrust case.
